INTRODUCTION Pathan is a British term for Pashtun (Pushtun or Pukhtun). Its an ethnolinguistic group residing primarily in the region that lies between the Hindu Kush in northeastern Afghanistan and the northern stretch of the Indus River in Pakistan. LINEAGE. We have descended from a variety of ethnicities, including Persians, Greeks, Turks, Arabs, Bactrians, Scythians, Tartars, Huns (Hephthalites), Mongols, Moghals (Mughals), and anyone else who has crossed the region. WORLD’S LARGET TRIBAL SYSTEM We form the world's largest living tribal society, comprising over 60 million people and between 350 and 400 tribes and clans. Today they constitute the second largest ethnic group in Pakistan and the largest in Afghanistan. No conqueror has managed to tame the extremely proud and fiercely-independent martial tribes of Pathans. LANGUAGE The Pashtun are united primarily by a common language, Pashto, which belong to the Eastern Iranian branch of the Iranian language family. Pashto language is roughly 3500 to 2500 years old and is believed to have originated in the Kandahar/Helmand areas of Afghanistan. DNA Pashtuns enjoy a large west Eurasian haplogroup contribution of at least 64.3% CODE OF PRACTICE. We still cherish our customs enshrined in our tribal code, called ''The Pakhtunwali''.
